CD Feirense star Oghenekaro Etebo stole the show as Nigeria U-23 defeated Japan 5-4 in their first game at the Rio Olympics game in Brazil.
Eatebo scored four of Nigeria's five goals in d nine goal thriller match as Roma star Sadiq Umar got the other.
The 2016 Rio Olympics formally commenced on Friday with breathtaking opening ceremony held at the 78,838 capacity Maracana Stadium. This was two days after some of the events like football had commenced.
Despite the country's obvious worst Olympics preparation, Nigeria had contributed a total of 78 athletes to the estimated total of 11,178 athletes from around the 206 Nations Olympics committees including first time entrance of Kosovo and South Sudan.
The participant nations will be competing for 306 sets of medals in 28 Olympics sports which Team Nigeria will compete for medals in 10 sports namely athletics, , basketball (male), boxing, canoeing, football (male), rowing, swimming, table tennis, weight lifting and wrestling.
Although Nigeria first participated in Olympics at the Helsinki 1952, the first medal was won at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo when Nojim Maiyesun won a bronze medal in the men's middleweight boxing event et cetera.
